Clever Area of Trapezoid

Equal Area Substitution

๐Ÿซ Warm-Up: The Twin Chocolate Bar

Twin Chocolate A = Twin Chocolate B Shared Bite โ‘ก Leftover โ‘  Leftover โ‘ข

๐Ÿ–๏ธ Live Hand-Signal Poll

Suppose we slide the two identical twin chocolate bars so they overlap in the middle:

We cut away the Shared Bite (โ‘ก).
Alex eats the Orange Leftover (โ‘ ). Bob eats the Blue Leftover (โ‘ข)!

Who gets more chocolate?

  • 1 Finger Alex gets more
  • 2 Fingers Bob gets more
  • Cross Arms (=) Exactly Equal!

๐ŸŒŸ The Golden Principle:

Same Whole โˆ’ Same Overlap = Same Leftover!
Orange Leftover โ‘  = Blue Leftover โ‘ข

๐Ÿ“ Calculating Area of a Trapezoid

Top Base (a) Bottom Base (b) Height (h)

๐Ÿงฐ Key Dimensions

Parallel Bases Top Base (a) and Bottom Base (b) never intersect
Perpendicular Height Height (h) is the straight 90ยฐ distance between the bases
Trapezoid Area Formula
Area = (Top Base + Bottom Base) ร— Height 2 = (a + b) ร— h 2
๐Ÿ’ก Why divide by 2? Two identical trapezoids join together to form a rectangle of width (a + b) and height h! So one trapezoid is exactly half.

๐Ÿ” The Mystery Problem & Spotting the Trap

20 8 5 1 2 3 4 5 6

๐Ÿ“‹ Problem Statement

The figure is made up of two identical right trapezoids, which are overlapping with each other.

Find the area of the shaded part.

โš ๏ธ Trap Alert!

The grey shaded part has 6 sides!
It is a crooked L-shape, NOT a standard trapezoid or rectangle.

โŒ We do NOT know its top length!
โŒ We do NOT know its slanted edges!
๐Ÿ‘‰ Trying to calculate it directly is a trap!

โœจ Step 1: The "Aha!" Swap (Equal Area Substitution)

โ‘  โ‘ก โ‘ข

๐Ÿ  The 3 Rooms in Our House:

Room โ‘  Target Shaded Room โ‘ก Shared Overlap Room โ‘ข Friendly Trapezoid
Upper Trapezoid = Room โ‘  + Room โ‘ก
Lower Trapezoid = Room โ‘ข + Room โ‘ก
Since Upper Twin = Lower Twin:
โ‘  + โ‘ก = โ‘ข + โ‘ก
๐ŸŽ‰ Shaded Area โ‘  = Blue Trapezoid โ‘ข!

๐Ÿ“ Step 2 & 3: Measure Blue Trapezoid โ‘ข & Solve!

Bottom Base = 20 Height = 8 5 Top Base = ? Total Upper Twin Base = 20 Top Base = 20 โˆ’ 5 = 15
โœ๏ธ Workspace: Trapezoid Area Calculation
Formula: Area = (Top Base + Bottom Base) ร— Height รท 2
Area = (15 + 20) ร— 8 2 = 35 ร— 4 = 140
๐Ÿ’ก Trick: Divide 8 รท 2 = 4 first! Then double 35 to 70, and double 70 to 140!

โšก Challenge: Master the Twin!

12 6 4 โ‘  โ‘ก โ‘ข
Step 1: Equal Area Swap
Shaded Area โ‘  = Bottom Trapezoid โ‘ข
Step 2: Hidden Top Base
Inside Top Base = 12 โˆ’ 4 = 8
Step 3: Rapid Mental Math
Area = (8 + 12) ร— 6 2 = 20 ร— 3 = 60

๐Ÿ† Master of Equal Area Substitution

1

Spot the Twins

Whenever two identical shapes overlap, their total areas are always 100% equal (Upper = Lower).

2

Subtract Shared Overlap

โ‘  + โ‘ก = โ‘ข + โ‘ก โŸน โ‘  = โ‘ข.
Trade the weird 6-sided L-shape for the friendly bottom right trapezoid!

3

Hunt Shifting Lengths

Subtract the overhang to uncover hidden inner bases:
20 โˆ’ 5 = 15!
